The Wild Ones Marketing & Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for leading brand awareness and communications to grow Wild Ones’ image as a leader in the natural landscaping movement.
Wild Ones is a national nonprofit environmental organization whose mission is to promote environmentally sound landscaping practices that protect biodiversity through the preservation, restoration, and establishment of native plant communities. We have a lean and efficient national office that supports the work of nationwide members and chapters and leads the organization in planning, advocacy, and policy guidance.
Responsibilities Include:
- Develop and carry out Wild Ones brand and communication strategy through the creation of an annual Marketing & Communication Plan and Calendar that align with the goals of Wild Ones Strategic Plan.
- Ensure consistent, desirable messaging is conveyed through Wild Ones national communications channels including but not limited to print materials, newsletters, Journal, organizational email communications, public website content, public blog, social media channels, etc.
- Promote Wild Ones educational programs (Native Garden Designs, Seeds for Education, Wild for Monarchs, Journal, etc.) in collaboration with the Education and Program Coordinator.
- Promote partner educational programs (Monarch Joint Venture, 2/3 for the Birds, New Directions in the American Landscape, etc.) in collaboration with the Education and Program Coordinator.
- Assist the Development Director in cultivating donor relationships and producing fundraising communications that includes, but not limited to, fundraising appeals and annual reports.
- Maintain Wild Ones Brand Book, national and chapter visual brand assets, brand, and style guidelines as well as editorial guidelines (together with Journal Editor).
- Support the efforts of Wild Ones chapter leaders to stay on brand/mission in chapter-level marketing and communications.
- Develop and maintain a library of marketing photos and templates, including but not limited to brochures, flyers, business cards, letterhead, slide decks, postcards, etc.
- Coordinate the Annual Wild Ones Photo Contest.
- Oversee marketing-related budget funds.
- Manage Wild Ones’ merchandise e-commerce platform together with the IT Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Education, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field or equivalent experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills and able to communicate effectively, clearly, and concisely in written and verbal communications. Excellent people skills with the ability to communicate with a variety of stakeholders.
- Hands-on attitude with flexibility and willingness to cross-train with and support colleagues in a small office environment.
- Experience in developing and managing project plans and providing status updates. Must have a strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced and remote environment with a stable internet connection.
- Excellent attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing written materials and interpersonal communication skills to build relationships with members of the public, partners, chapters, and board members.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently, self-manage, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Willingness and ability to learn and understand software programs and other technology as applicable.
- Experience with writing SEO/SEM-optimized content.
- Solid knowledge of website analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint).
- Proficient in popular social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter, etc.).
- Proficient in popular video conferencing platforms.
- Experience with email marketing platforms (e.g., Constant Contact, MailChimp),
- Experience with visual communication tools including Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat) and Canva Pro.
- Experience with WordPress, donor management, and member management systems.
- 3-5 years of membership, chapter, and donor experience with an environmental nonprofit or foundation preferred.
- Knowledge of native plants is a plus.
Salary and Hours:
This is a full-time hourly position, compensation is $19.50 – $23.00 per hour based on experience. Flexible hours are required to accommodate frequent evening meetings and occasional weekend meetings. Infrequent travel is a potential on an annual basis for in-person board meetings or fundraising events.
Wild Ones national staff are currently working a mix of in-office hours and remote hours. Remote work may be considered depending on the candidates’ location.
