The Marketing and Communications Director is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive marketing strategies that support organizational growth and mission alignment. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position oversees brand management, strategic communications, and digital initiatives, ensuring consistent messaging and a strong national presence. The Marketing Director provides marketing support to chapters, leads digital strategy and technology enhancements, and collaborates across departments to maximize outreach, engagement, and impact. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Fundamental Responsibilities 

Strategic Leadership 

Develops and leads a multiyear marketing strategy that advances Wild Ones growth priorities while serving as an active member of the leadership team to help guide organizational direction and strengthen cross departmental alignment. In this role, the Marketing Director establishes monitors, and reports on key performance indicators that measure brand reach, audience expansion, and membership engagement. They also direct ongoing market research and audience insight efforts, using data to shape strategic recommendations that ensure Wild Ones remains relevant, visible, and well positioned to achieve its mission. 

Brand Management & Communications 

Oversees Wild Ones national brand identity by managing visual guidelines, messaging frameworks, and overall organizational consistency across all communications. In this role, the Marketing Director leads the content strategy for digital platforms, print materials, email communications, social media, narrative storytelling and educational program promotion. They guide the organization through crisis communications and sensitive public messaging, ensuring responses are timely, accurate, and aligned with Wild Ones mission and values. As the senior brand steward, the Director ensures that Wild Ones is represented professionally, consistently, and compellingly in every internal and external communication. 

Chapter & Program Marketing Support 

Creates scalable marketing toolkits, templates, assets, and guidance that chapters can easily use to strengthen their local outreach efforts. They work closely with the Programs and Education teams to amplify national programs through thoughtful and cohesive outreach strategies, ensuring materials are clear, accessible, and mission driven. The Marketing Director leads the development of national program marketing resources that chapters can readily deploy in their communities and provides direct support to chapters by sharing best practices in outreach, local communications, and mission aligned storytelling. 

Digital Strategy & Technology 

Oversee the Wild Ones website, ensuring that SEO, analytics, and user experience are continuously optimized to support membership growth, program participation, and donor conversions. They collaborate closely with Web Development staff and external partners to enhance digital infrastructure, including improvements to site functionality, registration systems, digital forms, and overall security. In addition, the Marketing Director leads Wild Ones digital advertising strategy, developing targeted campaigns that expand national reach, increase brand visibility, and strengthen engagement across key audiences. 

Team Leadership & Management 

Hires, supervises, mentors, and evaluates marketing staff and contractors, ensuring the team has the support and guidance needed to excel in their roles. They establish clear workflows, timelines, and systems that create efficient, coordinated marketing operations across the organization. In addition, the Director cultivates a strong internal culture grounded in collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement, fostering an environment where staff feel empowered, aligned, and supported in advancing the mission of Wild Ones. 

Budget Management & Operations 

The Marketing Director develops and manages the marketing budget by forecasting organizational needs, evaluating priorities, and recommending strategic investments that strengthen Wild Ones visibility and impact. They oversee all vendors, contractors, and agency relationships, ensuring partners are aligned with organizational goals and deliver high-quality work. The marketing Director also ensures that every marketing campaign, material, and deliverable is executed with excellence, maintaining high standards of timeliness, accuracy, and brand consistency across all channels. 

External Partnerships & Representation 

The Marketing Director represents Wild Ones in media engagements, national partnerships, conferences, and public events, serving as a confident and credible ambassador for the organization. In this role, the Director builds and strengthens high value relationships that enhance organizational visibility, deepen trust with stakeholders, and elevate Wild Ones reputation within the conservation and native plant communities. 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE 

  • The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business, environmental studies, or a related field, or brings equivalent experience that demonstrates strong strategic capability.  
  • They have seven to ten years of progressive marketing experience, including at least three years in a leadership role, with a proven record in multichannel communications, brand development, and strategic planning.  
  • They bring experience managing staff and contractors, working effectively with vendors, and overseeing complex marketing workflows with clarity and professionalism.  
  • The candidate is fluent in modern digital marketing tools and approaches, including SEO/SEM, analytics platforms, CRM and CMS systems, and broader digital strategy.  
  • Experience working within nonprofit or chapter-based networks is preferred, along with a genuine passion for the environment, native plants, and healthy ecosystems that align with the mission and values of Wild Ones.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to identify and implement efficiencies in processes. 
  • Demonstrated intermediate to advanced computer proficiency, with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and applicable software platforms. 
  • Strong strategic marketing and analytical leadership skills, including the ability to design long-range marketing plans, interpret data, guide KPIs, and align marketing initiatives with organizational goals. 
  • Deep knowledge of brand stewardship and multichannel communications, with the ability to craft and maintain consistent messaging, manage crisis communications, and guide content across digital, print, social, and program-based platforms. 
  • Demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and cross functional influence, including the ability to mentor staff, manage contractors, build trust across teams, and foster a positive, mission aligned internal culture. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT and Job Specifications

  • Regular use of computers, digital tools, and standard office equipment to support daily work and cross team collaboration, with the ability to sit (or stand) for extended periods while performing computer-based tasks and participating in virtual meetings. 
  • Occasional travel and occasional evening or weekend hours (typically a few times per month or as organizational needs arise) may be required to support events, webinars, timesensitive communications, conferences, partner meetings, or national gatherings or staff meetings.
