The native gardens at Dane County Humane Society's Wildlife Center serve many purposes--to showcase native plants in a commercial setting, to provide food for native insects, to educate our Camp Wildside students, and even to provide natural food and enrichment for wild patients undergoing rehabilitation! Come help us maintain the gardens and learn more about native gardening while getting to know other Wild Ones members! 

To kick off Wisconsin Stormwater Week, this month’s learning topic will focus on rain gardens and downspout gardens. Learn more about these special gardens, when they can be used, and how to install them. Planting plans and resources will be available and experts will be on hand to provide design help and answer questions. You can also watch the rainfall simulator in action to see how rain gardens work to prevent stormwater pollution.

Stone Silo will be holding a pop-up sale to try and empty their inventory.

As a part of that, we are bringing in Judy Cardin to talk to us about our native bees.

Our Chapter has partnered with Friends of Wehr/FOW to sponsor the Annual Summit at FAITH IN PLACE for a special showing of Bill McKibben at Wehr Nature Center on 9/29/26, doors open at 5:00pm.  It is free, and so is parking! You need to register by 9/13/26 (below)

Bill McKibben is an author, educator, and environmentalist, who helped found 350.org, the first global grassroots climate campaign, and who has recently helped found Third Act to build a progressive organization/movement for people over the age of 60.  McKibben is an internationally known protestor and has fought the Keytone Pipeline.

Our program begins at 5:45pm.  Speaker is presenting 6:00-7:30.  Doors close at 8pm.

Join your community to watch, connect, and be inspired.  Come to the Watch Party.  If you can't join us for the fun at Wehr, you can watch it from home. You will be sent a link for viewing at home when you register.  

FOW will have a BAKE SALE during the event.

Our Chapter is doing the coolest things, like this program.  We will be tabling the Faith in Place Wehr event, and another one in central Milwaukee to promote native plants.

McKibben's productions:  "This Is Economic Self-Sabotage" - A sober 18 minute MUST WATCH that illuminates an array of negative effects due to the climate rollbacks.   He has authored many books and his fight against Keystone is featured in "Oil and Honey".

The Prairie in Seed

Format: In person
Date/Time: Sunday, Oct 3, 10am-3:30pm (half hour lunch on your own)
Location: Pope Farm Conservancy in Middleton, WI
Elective (5 hours)

Description: The fall is great time to experience the prairie in its final beauty. This course will serve as an introduction to identifying seed-bearing prairie plants. Students will tour a restored prairie and learn techniques to collect and store seeds from various species. Those that attend will also learn from a restoration expert how to break native seed dormancy and grow their own native plants. Students will then have the opportunity to take home their own "mini-greenhouses" of native seeds they collected to include in their home landscaping.
