iNaturalist is one of many computer applications that help you identify sights and sounds that you experience. This one is especially useful for living things. For Wild Ones members, it’s especially good at wildflowers. While the artificial intelligence that drives initial identification is amazing, it has something more, a community of naturalists that crowd source id’s. And because of this human touch, corroborated identifications become ‘research grade’ and are shared with other databases for research purposes.

This event is hosted by Ray Stewart, Greater Cleveland Wild Ones Community Science Chair, who invites you to become a part of this community science effort. In graduate school he wrote a paper on this app and he has been an active participant for some time. The iNaturalist.org management has designated him an iNaturalist Ambassador.

The preferred method of observation is a smartphone using the free app. Your observation consists of a photograph or a recorded sound which you upload. Optionally, you can use a camera or recording device to capture an observation in the field and, later, upload it via desktop computer.

In person iNaturalist oRientation is offered for free on April 11th from 1pm to 4pm in Amherst, Ohio.

Agenda

-1-2 Introduction to iNaturalist PPT presentation and discussion
-2-3  Hands on field experience making observations and using the app.
-3-4 How to Make a Good Observation PPT presentation and one on one assistance if there are any glitches.

Attendees are encouraged to:
-Bring a smart phone with the iNaturalist app installed and;
-Sign up for an iNaturalist account.
Attendees who prefer can use a camera and upload photos from a desktop. Sounds can also be used as observations.

Join us in person for the Seeds of Connection info session. It's a great chance to meet fellow native plant beginners AND enthusiasts, learn what it's all about, and see how you can become a Community Ambassador at one of our upcoming events.

No need to be an expert! Opportunities range from: greeting people at events and orienting them to what to expect to staffing an info table to provide Wild Ones educational materials to event attendees. Volunteer with us just once, or at multiple events if you have more time and interest.

Come ready to connect, share, and be part of something awesome. Can't wait to see you there!

Parking: There is room for a few spots to park in the driveway; additional spots are available on the nearest cross street on Crosby, with a short walk to the house.
