“A Tribute to Pluggin’ on the Bark River” by Diana Matthews

Photo Story: Several years ago, prairie plugs were installed by Tallgrass Restoration along a section of the Bark River in Downtown Delafield, Wisconsin. This lovely section is also part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail!

Once a month, a group of Ice Age Trail volunteers known as the “Blazing Babes” assist the coordinator of the group “Pluggin’ on the Bark River” with maintenance of the plantings.

Walking back to my car after a morning of weeding with the Babes, I spied one of the many(!) monarchs we saw that day landing on a coneflower. I snapped several photos rather quickly as I passed, hoping that could capture it before it flew off. Voila!

What a tribute to the community’s vision for restoration; AND a heartwarming tribute to “Pluggin’ on the Bark River” — affirming its hearty volunteerism, sustained leadership, and TLC!
