"Bell's Roadside-Skipper Sips Silphium" by Kathy Malone
Plant(s): Bell's Roadside-Skipper
Photo Story: I planted Silphium next to my back porch landing railing so I could attract butterflies and other wildlife, and so I could easily see which butterflies came to it for nectar. I had not only butterflies nectar on it, but Ruby-throated Hummingbirds visited it, and American Goldfinches sipped water from the plant's "cups." Wasps sipped water too, and bees nectared on it. Among the butterflies that sipped nectar on it were Eastern Tiger and Spicebush swallowtails, Hoary Edges, Silver-spotted Skippers, Silvery Checkerspots and Zabulon Skippers. (...A few more things I neglected to mention in my first entry of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail...) All roadside skippers are declining, so it was especially gratifying to see a Bell's visit the yard and nectar from the buffet I prepared for it and others!

"Hope" by Jill Andersen
Plant(s): Swallowtail Larva on a self-seeded dill plant among the Joe Pye Weed.
Photo Story: When we moved in our current home 6 years ago, it was a wasteland of grass and Tiger Lily's. There were no butterflies or birds and no bushes on the property. When I saw this caterpillar, it showed our years of working the property with native plants has been worth it. We have a long way to go, but our native gardens have attracted enormous amounts of pollinators and the birds are numerous in the yard. It is always a work in progress, but seeing this caterpillar has given us renewed hope.

"Hummingbirds with Turk's Cap Lilies" by Vicki Holmberg
Plant(s): These are two ruby-throated hummingbirds attracted to the Turk's Cap, a native lily, both species are native to the Eastern US. Turk's Cap Lily ( Lilium superbum). Ruby-Throated Hummingbird( Archilochus colubris).
Photo Story: Hummingbirds co-evolved with this flower, being attracted to its bright orange color and being able to hover in mid air to collect nectar from a flower that has no place to perch. In the process they pollinate the lily. Our valley used to be filled with such flowers, but more often we see expanses of turf grass, which provides little of value for wildlife. Our gardens are an oasis of food shelter and biodiversity, chemical free. Let these species live again and we have many visitors come from surrounding garden clubs that come to see an alternative to the sterile plantings elsewhere.

"Eastern Tiger Swallowtail cup plant feast" by Cathy Streett
Plant(s): Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Papilio glaucus on Cup Plant blooms, Silphium perfoliatum.
Photo Story: I was involved in a county wide pollinator BioBlitz the week this lovely butterfly obliged for many photos. BioBlitzing is a great way to get out in nature, make observations to help scientists, learn to identify living things and learn more about the observed species. The best part is observing what is living and using your native plants in your home habitat and knowing that because of your practices you are providing for wildlife in all forms.

"Augochlorine Sweat Bee on swamp milkweed bloom" by Cathy Streett
Plant(s): Augochlorine Sweat Bees (Tribe Augochlorini)
Asclepias incarnata, swamp milkweed
Photo Story: This was observed in my rain garden where stems, large and small branches are left over the seasons. I have seen many more beautiful GREEN (my favorite color) sweat bees in the last few years, I think that the practice of leaving things "wild" has helped. The swamp milkweed hasn't bloomed the last few years so I was happy to see that it blooming and helping this tiny pollinator.

"I Have a Question" by Martha Moore
Plant(s): Sweetscented Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum)
Question Mark butterfly Polygonia interrogationis)
Some Spotted Joe Pye Weed might be visible.
Photo Story: Along my back fence Joe Pye Weed happily grows like a weed! One late afternoon in early August I spotted this unusual butterfly. I backed away, grabbed my camera, and slowly returned. It was still there and remained still, even when my little point and shoot camera was just inches away. But I had a question? What is this butterfly? Internet research that evening and an email to our local nature center confirmed I had spotted a question mark!

Some Spotted Joe Pye Weed might be visible.
Photo Story: I only spotted this 'dead leaf' critter because when I walked by its wings were unfolded, allowing me to take photos of its rusty orange and black designs. While wondering what butterfly it was it closed its wings and turned into this 'dead leaf'. Internet research and our local nature center taught this old teacher that some butterflies are named after punctuation! This one? Question mark.

Photo Story: When we moved to our "new to us" 150 year old house a few years ago, we made a conscious decision to plant mostly natives, including the whole front yard! The birds, bees, and butterflies love them. The plants provide nectar, pollen, seeds, and water! And the bees love to sleep on the flowers.
