Chapter: Wild Ones River City-Grand Rapids Area

Chapter Role: Immediate Past President

Favorite Native Plant: Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

I am the immediate past president of Wild Ones River City Chapter (Grand Rapids, MI). During my tenure, we completed our first set of bylaws, a strategic plan, new member orientation and member garden “Walkabouts." We are also planning a second regional conference for 2022. My professional experience includes non-profit administration, communications, fund development and volunteer coordination. I was a journalist, publisher and teacher. I am a fifth generation Michiganer. I married (one of) my high school sweethearts. I have two lovely grown children—a daughter who produces nature films for the BBC, and a son who is a professional musician and HR professional in Austin, TX. When it’s warm and sunny, you’ll find me “rewilding" my six-acre city lot, monitoring butterflies or birds for two citizen scientist projects. When weather keeps me inside, I write. I’m well into my second novel, a love story with a lesson about native plants. Stay tuned! :-)

What inspired you to become involved with Wild Ones:
Some wonderful friends insisted I join Wild Ones River City five or six years ago and it has changed my life. I have made more wonderful friends who "get" me and my love of everything wild and outdoors. WO has enabled me to use my gardening and land restoration skills, but my leadership and organizational skills as well.
