J.D. Carlson lives in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and is a member of the North Oakland Chapter of Wild Ones. He, his wife Paula and their three kids enjoy being outdoors and have vacationed at most of the U.S. National Parks.
What inspired you to become involved with Wild Ones:
Many years ago I was hunting for an outdoor service project my young Cub Scout pack could participate in and came across a Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MiDNR) program about gathering native seeds. The DNR officer gave a little presentation to the scouts where she explained that approximately 98% of Michigan prairie had been converted to farmland, which I found shocking. I found volunteering for various projects like invasive plant removal, collecting seeds etc., offered an opportunity for me to escape my busy Fortune 500 CFO role. Cell phone reception is generally poor in these areas! I dragged my kids whenever I could to these projects through the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, MiDNR or other organizations. It was on one of these projects I came across three extremely motivated and knowledgeable individuals who were happy to engage me socially. They were, of course, local Wild Ones chapter members and introduced me to the organization.
