"Rainy Day Blues" by Rebecca Hayes
Plant(s): Vaccinium corymbosum (Highbush blueberry)
Photo Story: My 5-year-old son and I are very fond of the berry bushes that grow on our property, mostly for the yummy treat that we can eat outside through the summer (the berries never make it to the house-one year I watched him stick his face in the bowl that we were using to collect them). The blueberry bushes are always one of my favorites as they have such beautiful spring flowers that promise those delicious berries for us to pick come July. This spring, I was admiring the flowers on the bush and the raindrops that stuck just added a little extra beauty. It just seemed to remind me that some of our fun summer memories would not happen without those springtime rainy days.

"Wonderful Unfolding Stems of Flowers" by Neal Bringe
Plant(s): Mountain Deathcamas (Zigadenus elegans)
Photo Story: I hiked the popular Herman Gulch Trail July 5th and was struck by the beauty of the flowering stems of this plant. The stems were bent over with flower buds as if to be humble to hold such wonders that would gradually bloom. I noticed from other plants that when all of the flowers are all finished opening the stem becomes straight. I am glad that I did not touch the plant because when I looked up the identity I found out that the leaves and flowers are poisonous, hence the name, Deathcamas.

"Golden Cassian Sea for Bees" by Courtney Denning
Plant(s): Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata)
Photo Story: I planted a 720 square-foot bed with several native trees and shrubs in the fall of 2020. I remembered a recommendation from a native landscape designer to use partridge pea as a green mulch in new perennial beds to keep weeds down while the slower-growing perennials mature. I decided to try it since I was intrigued by the idea of a native annual prairie plant. I bought seeds in bulk and scattered them in the winter of 2020 and again in the spring of 2021. The partridge peas were slow to germinate but proliferated once they started growing! They grew into medium, shrubby plants covered with yellow flowers and happy bumble bees. The bees were so loud that I kept mistaking them for my neighbors’ lawn sprinklers! I harvested seed in 2021 and shared it with my local seed library. In 2022, the bed is so thick with partridge peas that none of the individual plants became shrubby. This year they are more akin to trees growing close together in a forest, thin and reaching for the sun. I weeded the partridge peas to make paths through the large bed. I love being in the center of the bed, surrounded by yellow flowers, soft green leaves, and bees buzzing.

Photo Story: Maud is a white oak that lives near a property line on our farm. She's 256 years old, according to our estimate. "Possibilities - A Silhouette at Sundown" by Jessie Steggall
Plant(s): Anise Hyssop, Agastache Foeniculum
Photo Story: This photo was a happy accident. I was trying to get a picture of a couple Drone Flies on my first year Anise Hyssop plants I grew from seed last fall. while scoping out a good angle, my camera took this picture . There’s something about the way the leaves branch and the flower bends against the evening sky that, to me, captures the indomitable spirit of native plants. From seed to this beautiful form in less than a year. For months, these seedlings sat a few inches high, and in the last month have exploded to 2 foot blooming beauties, becoming bees and other pollinators. The possibilities, what will this plant look like a year from now, and a year from then? And what will it offer our backyard friends? ❤️
