Organizing a Wild Ones chapter is a great way to get together with friendly, knowledgeable people who share your interest in native plants and natural landscaping. Feel free to contact the Wild Ones Executive Director for additional materials either via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or toll free via phone at 877-394-9453.
Start by reading the basic information on this page, and then (when you're ready) you can check out our more detailed Chapter Start-up Kit which includes everything you'll need to really get started.
Chapters form in a variety of ways. We have several chapters that started in a university environment. Others have evolved from an existing organization such as a garden club or nature center volunteers, and some were started simply by a few people who were interested in natural landscaping and sharing their interest with the public. A great source of assistance can be the local county extension agent.
As the hub of the organization, the National officers will provide support, guidance and information to help you form a viable group in your area. Enclosed in this Start-Up Packet are basic chapter guidelines, membership applications, program ideas and copies of past Wild Ones Journals to help you get started. Feel free to make as many copies of the membership application as you need. You may wish to personalize the information to reflect your chapter's specific information.
Please keep the Wild Ones Executive Director informed of your progress. Also, let her know what you'd like to call your "seedling" chapter and if you'd like your name listed as a contact person in our Wild Ones Journal. She can also send some posters for you to use to announce your organizational meetings. As you meet with people and they become members of Wild Ones, you will receive a monthly membership report with their names and contact information. We may send this information electronically, so it will be necessary for you to let the Wild Ones Executive Director know to whom to send the information and in what database format.
We also have a listing of frequently asked questions and answers available for your help in answering questions of your new members and potential officers. When you're ready, please request this document from the Wild Ones Executive Director.
As you get to the point of being organized, fill out the enclosed information sheet and return it as indicated. When your chapter is chartered, you will be given access to the "chapters only" section of the Wild Ones website which will enable you to download the Wild Ones Chapter Guidebook containing policies, by-laws, program ideas and a variety of other information that will help your chapter grow. Certain information which is not downloadable from the Wild Ones website will be sent to you by the Wild Ones Executive Director.
Please feel free to contact Wild Ones National President or the Wild Ones Executive Director if you have any questions about the materials or procedures. Also, don't hesitate to refer to our website at www.for-wild.org. It has lots of relevant information.
Good luck with your Wild Ones chapter start up. Call if you have questions and please don't forget to stay in touch!
